Mt. State Art & Craft Fair Returns

Grandaddy is back.

The Mountain State Art & Craft Fair is July 2-4, 2021 at Cedar Lakes Conference Center, near Ripley. The fair makes its return after being cancelled IN 2020 due to Covid-19.

Originating as part of West Virginia’s 1963 Centennial Celebration, the fair is known as the state’s “granddaddy of art & craft events.” Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and active military personnel and $3 for youth 12 and under. Hours are 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Fair president Jean Smith says it’s great to be back.

“This event is such a special tradition that folks have enjoyed for more than 50 years.” she said. “We’re looking forward to bringing back the gifted artisans. It’s a great shopping opportunity. The talented musicians and the fair food add to the experience.”

As in the past, the fair includes five special Heritage exhibits such as glass blowing blacksmithing and shingle splitting. There are six interactive artisans offering “make it-take it” opportunities including woodturning, stained glass, paper marbling and kite making.

Marketplace features many tasty products to take home such as apple butter and corn meal made on site and a selection of WV wines. Nine food vendors are offering treats ranging from pepperoni rolls and pulled pork to kettle corn and funnel cakes.

A July 2 kid’s fishing derby at 11 a.m. offers prizes for the first 100 participants age 14 and under. West Virginia’s Department of Natural Resources is the sponsor. A parade of antique tractors is scheduled on Sunday, July 4.

The daily schedule includes traditional Appalachian music, cooking demonstrations and tales by the WV Storyteller’s Guild. A quilt show takes place in Jackson Hall. Call 304-372-3247 for entry information.
