Former Logan police officer to be sentenced Thursday following excessive force conviction

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A former Logan police officer is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday after previously being found guilty of using excessive force.

Everett Maynard (File)

A federal jury handed down its decision regarding Everett Maynard in November. The jury determined Maynard was guilty of violating the civil rights of a man he had taken into custody.

The jury heard evidence showing Maynard assaulted a man identified as “R.W.” in the bathroom of the Logan Police Department before dragging him into another room. Maynard then rammed the man’s head against a doorframe.

The man was left unconscious following the assault. He also had a broken shoulder, a broken nose and a cut to his head that needed staples.

Maynard faces a maximum of 10 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. in the courtroom of U.S. District Judge Irene Berger.
