MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Berkeley County Schools Superintendent Dr. Patrick Murphy is retiring.
Murphy announced his decision at Monday night’s Berkeley County Board of Education meeting.
“I want to thank the board for accepting my retirement, I have enjoyed my three years here working with all of you. It has continued to be a learning experience,” Murphy said.
The superintendent will serve in the role until June 30.
“There’s still much work to be done. We will continue to move forward,” Murphy said.
Murphy took the helm in September of 2019, less than six months before COVID hit.
“I want to thank the whole Berkeley County community and team, from families, to the students, to our staff, for the work that we’ve done, especially over these last two and a half years,” Murphy said. “It’s a situation that none of us could either predict or fathom. I think it has actually made all of us stronger and better for it and hopefully we have reset the table and we’re going to be moving forward in the right direction.”
Murphy has worked in education since 1988, coming to the Eastern Panhandle after serving as superintendent of Arlington Public Schools in Virginia for 10 years.
He also worked for Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia, not far from the Eastern Panhandle.
In 2015, Dr. Murphy was named “Virginia Superintendent of the Year” and was a finalist for “2015 National Superintendent of the Year” by the School Superintendents Association.
Murphy said he’d help in any way he could with the transition to a new superintendent.
