CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Authorities are describing a man shot by Princeton police officers over the weekend as “highly agitated” and “aggressive.”
According to the Princeton Police Department, an officer shot the man after being attacked in the incident.
Officers on Saturday evening responded to North Fifth Street about a white male causing a disturbance with an ATV. Officers spoke to a person who contacted authorities about damages to the property and the ATV’s location before contacting the suspect. Officers attempted to put the man into custody, but he charged at law enforcement with an aluminum baseball bat.
The man attacked an officer and nearly hit him with the bat. The officer shot a gun and struck the suspect. Authorities conducted first aid and life-saving measures. The suspect later died at Princeton Community Hospital.
The West Virginia State Police received a request to investigate the incident. The department has placed two police officers on administrative leave.
