MILL CREEK, W.Va. — Cam Manns, Colten Tate and Tyler Reed combined to strikeout 17 batters as Class AA No. 5 Shady Spring shutout Class A No. 6 Tygarts Valley, 9-0. Both teams are now 11-3.
Manns [9 strikeouts], Tate [6 strikeouts] and Reed [2 strikeouts] combined to yield just 3 hits.
“Yesterday with the Bluefield game getting cancelled, we were going to start Cam. But with the game getting cancelled, we wanted to get him some looks on the mound. Once we got to fifty pitches and we had a 7-0 lead at the time, I thought let’s get Tate in and get him some work,” said Shady Spring head coach Jordan Meadows.
“Tate came in and did well. And good job for Reed too.”
The game was scoreless until the third inning when Shady put seven runs on the board thanks to a six-hit attack and a pair of Tygarts Valley errors.
“I just told the guys, ‘Keep hitting fastballs. Fastballs, fastballs, fastballs’. We executed. They made some mistakes but we jumped on them and scored. After that, we kind of died off. But that inning was big.”
Shady Spring added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Adam Richmond drove in three runs with a pair of doubles. Josh Lovell and Manns each had a pair of RBI.
“Right now we are just working on getting our pitchers right and getting ready for sectionals,” Meadows said. “We know what we’ve got in the sectional championship and that is Independence. We are just working every day for that.”
Matthew Pratt turned in an effective relief outing for the Bulldogs. He allowed just one run in three innings and he struck out four batters. Garrett Gibson, Brandon Mahoney and Pratt had base hits for TVHS.
