Saturday is application deadline for WV Scholar Program

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — High school juniors have until Saturday to apply for a four-year scholarship to West Virginia Wesleyan College.

The full ride to the Buckhannon institution is valued at approximately $160,000 through the West Virginia Scholar Program. It includes tuition, fees, and room and board.

John Waltz, vice president for enrollment management at Wesleyan, said the scholarship isn’t solely based on test scores.

“What we’re looking for is that well-roundedness whether they’re involved in athletics, community service or the arts, just like students at West Virginia Wesleyan. Students that really thrive at a college like ours are students that are involved,” Waltz said.

Waltz said the application process is simple.

“All they need to do is submit the application and transcript and there’s an essay portion. We encourage all students to work through that process,” he said.

Waltz said they love reading a student’s full story.

“We really want to read about the whole package. The essay is a place where they can really tell that story,” he said.

Fifteen finalists will be announced in May.

Each finalist will next go through a personal interview process and a review by the sponsors. An online public vote on the finalists will be held at wvmetronews.com.

The winner of the West Virginia Scholar 2022 will be announced at a luncheon in June.

The sponsors for the West Virginia Scholar Program include title sponsor Greer Industries along with West Virginia International Yeager Airport, the West Virginia Hospital Association, ZMM Architects & Engineers, Friends of Coal and the West Virginia Farm Bureau.
