School bus wreck sends seven to the hospital

FORT GAY, W.Va. –– Seven students aboard a Wayne County school bus were taken to the hospital to be checked out after a Monday morning accident.

Wayne County Superintendent of Schools Todd Alexander said the driver veered off the road and struck a utility pole. The crash happened around 7 a.m. Monday.

“The driver reported there were some deer in the road, but the State Police are investigating the accident,” Alexander said.

The students on the bus at the time ranged from elementary school to high school age. The bus served Fort Gay Pre-K-8 School and Tolsia High School.

“We had some injuries. We don’t believe they were serious, but we had seven students taken to the hospital either by ambulance or by parents to be checked out further,” he said.

The impact caused significant damage to the bus and sheered off the utility pole. The accident knocked out power to the area and forced the shutdown of the two nearby schools for the day.

State Police are investigating the wreck.
