Less than one month away from the start of the Mountain East Conference Tournament, MEC teams continue to battle for positioning within the standings. Wednesday provided another busy day of basketball.
Some of the more notable results:
Men’s Basketball
DAVIS & ELKINS 91, West Virginia State 82: The Senators never looked back after holding a six-point halftime lead.
D&E (14-9, 8-9) trailed by three with under 6:30 left in the first half, before outscoring West Virginia State (16-7, 10-7) 15-9 the remainder of the half.
Including the final five points of the first half and first five of the second, Davis & Elkins scored 10 unanswered points at the midway point of the game.
The Yellow Jackets trimmed the Senators’ lead to two midway through the second half, before Davis & Elkins went on a 14-2 spurt to hold a 70-56 lead.
West Virginia State got to within five, but could never get over the hump.
The Senators have won four straight after losing five of seven games in January.
Davis & Elkins forward Breland Walton, a former Woodrow Wilson High standout, led all scorers with 25 points and added 13 rebounds.
Four Yellow Jackets recorded double-figure performances, including Malik Whitaker with a team-high 21 points.
The Senators had a 50-36 edge in paint points and 40-12 in bench points.
FROSTBURG STATE 87, Alderson Broaddus 72: The Bobcats claimed a 15-point win to create separation between themselves and ninth place.
The Bobcats (8-15, 4-13) used a 17-0 run late in the first half to extend their lead to 41-19. Frostburg State’s 22-point first half advantage proved to be the largest lead of the game.
The Battlers (8-14, 6-11) lived up to their nickname and pulled to within one, but Frostburg eventually got the advantage back to double digits.
FSU guard Agyei Edwards played a big part in the outcome by leading all scorers with a season-high 33 points, which came on 60 percent shooting.
Frostburg State shot a season-best 60 percent, and the Bobcats committed a season-low six turnovers.
AB’s Jalen Knott recorded his fifth 20-point performance by scoring a team-high 24 points.
Women’s Basketball
CONCORD 75, Wheeling 68: The Cardinals went to the final quarter ahead 47-42, before Concord got an all-important 13-3 run in over the opening 4 minutes of the final period.
Wheeling cut the Mountain Lions’ lead to two with 5:11 left, but could get no closer as Concord scored 33 fourth-quarter points after generating only four over the first period.
Concord (9-13, 7-10) is looking to finish the season strong and has won four of its last five games.
Wheeling has now lost three straight after going 9-3 last month.
Former Bluefield High star Jaisah Smith led four Concord double-figure scorers with 17 points.
Shamia Strayhorn’s 18 points were a game-high in defeat.
