SUMMIT POINT, W.Va. — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says their Animal Control division seized more than a dozen horses from a farm in Summit Point after numerous complaints about the horses’ condition.
One deceased horse was discovered on the property March 1.
The sheriff’s office said a search warrant was executed Thursday at 1381 Leetown Road in Summit Point to “seize and secure animals under the suspicion of animal cruelty.”
A total of 13 horses were removed from the property. There were 9 mares and 4 foals. Each horse was examined by a veterinarian prior to being transferred to a safe location.
One deceased horse had been removed the previous day and has been taken for a necropsy to determine any injuries and cause of death.
“This is still an open, ongoing investigation,” according to the sheriff’s office. “Additional information will be provided after its completion.”
