POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — The Mason County Board of Education is using the assistance of the West Virginia School Board Association in its search for a new county school superintendent.

Current Superintendent Keith Burdette announced his retirement in late March. He’ll be on board until the end of June.
Burdette said applications for the next superintendent are coming in.
“The school board, in early May, will begin to screen the applicants and try to make a decision and have something to be in and take over on July 1,” Burdette told MetroNews affiliate WMOV Radio.
Burdette’s public education career spans 41 years. He has been the school superintendent in Mason County for the past two years. Before that he was an assistant superintendent in Jackson County for eight years. He was a classroom teacher for 18 years and then had a position in the state Department of Education for 13 years.
The Mason County school system is currently in a good position, Burdette said.
“I feel like I’ve been here in Mason County during a time of transition as we were coming out of covid and of course the announcements with industry coming to the county,” he said.
The major industry coming is the Nucor Steel Plant in Apple Grove. Construction is scheduled to begin later this year.
Nucor has already given the school system $1 million without restrictions. The board of education decided to use the money to upgrade security in every school in the county.
