CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey announcing another settlement in the state, but not one related to opioids.
TurboTax will be sending checks to consumers who were “tricked by TurboTax’s owner Intuit into paying for free tax services,” according to Morrisey.

The settlement is part of a nationwide deal adding up to $141 million. The settlement in West Virginia is for $728,699.97, according to a release put out by the Attorney General.
An investigation found Intuit had deceived millions of low-income Americans into paying for tax services that should have been free. The settlement was announced in May 2022.
“This company allegedly took money from consumers who thought they were getting the service for free,” Morrisey said. “This agreement will put this company, as well as others who are engaging in this practice, in check.”
Across the U.S., approximately 4.4 million consumers will receive checks in the mail as a result of the nationwide settlement. Eligible consumers will be contacted by email and checks will be mailed throughout the month of May.
Eligible people are those who paid to file their federal tax returns through TurboTax for 2016, 2017 and 2018 but were eligible to file for free through the IRS Free File Program.
Most consumers are expected to receive between $29 and $30.
