Missing Preston County man lifted out of Cheat Canyon

MASONTOWN, W.Va. — A Maryland State Police helicopter was used to lift a missing Preston County man out of the Cheat River Canyon to safety.

Preston County authorities said Tyler Smith, 42, was reported missing on Sunday. He was found Thursday at around 6 p.m. along the Cheat River.

The terrain and Smith’s condition made it necessary to call for additional assistance to rescue him.

He’s being treated at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Multiple agencies participated in the search, including the West Virginia State Police, the Maryland State Police, the Masontown Volunteer Fire Department, the Mountaineer Area Rescue Group and the Masontown Swift Water Rescue Team.

Smith was reporting missing after he was last seen Sunday walking along Bull Run Road toward the Masontown area.
