ARNOLDSBURG, W.Va. — Parts of West Virginia, other than eastern Kanawha County, are cleaning up after Monday’s flash flood.
About 15-25 homes in Calhoun County were damaged and many other properties were impacted, according to the county’s Office of Emergency Services Director Kelli Barr.
“We’ve lost businesses. There’s been some extreme farm damage including hay, damage to trackers, trucks, lots of vehicles,” Barr told MetroNews Thursday morning.
The damage was mainly in the Arnoldsburg area and south to Chloe.
The water rose quickly and reached up to three feet in some spots.
“A minimum in some places was 36 inches. Some places it was higher than that,” Barr said.
Since Monday, Calhoun County has been working with the American Red Cross and the state to provide cleaning buckets and other supplies to flood victims. Damage assessments are also underway.
“We have shovels, buckets, trash bags and gloves coming from the state and should be here today and we’ll deliver and disperse those,” Barr said.
In Boone County, no homes were damaged, but a few roads in the Seth area need to be repaired.
“We had some roads that were damaged. Currently, there’s about four roads that are all private roads that we’re trying to get assistance for those folks,” said Boone County Emergency Management Director Michael Mayhorn.
Damage was reported along Three Fork Road and Montgomery Drive in Seth, Lick Creek Branch Road in Van and Griffith Branch Road in Madison. About 6-8 inches of rain was reported in the Seth and Racine areas.
Mayhorn said it could’ve been much worse.
“We’re very fortunate it stopped when it did. Probably another half inch or inch we could’ve been in much worse shape,” he said.
It’s unknown how long it will take to repair the damaged roads in Boone County.
Monday’s flood was even worse for those living in on Winifrede Hollow, Slaughter’s Creek, Little Creek, Witcher Creek and Kelley’s Creek in Kanawha County. About 100 homes were damaged after nearly six inches of rain fell in just a few hours. No lives were lost, and no injuries were reported.
Kanawha County crews will begin picking up flood debris on Tuesday.
