Fayette County high school student killed in car crash

RUSSELLVILLE, W.Va. — A Midland Trail High School student died in a single vehicle crash Tuesday morning.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department said the 16-year-old boy was on his way to school at about 7 a.m. when his car went off state Route 41 near Russellville and hit a power pole.

He died from injuries suffered in the crash.

In a post on Facebook, the Midland Trail football team said, “As most of the community is aware, we tragically lost one of our own players, Damon Mooney. Make no mistake about it, we are a family and this one of our kids. We do not go a day without telling our kids we love them, and we mean it. Please pray for everyone’s comfort and healing during this time as we cope with the loss of #66 Damon Mooney.”

Deputies are continuing their investigation into the incident.
