Inmate dies at Southern Regional Jail

BEAVER, W.Va. — An inmate at the Southern Regional Jail has died.

The state Department of Commerce released a statement Friday which confirmed the death of the 19-year old female inmate. According to the department, the woman was found “uninjured and unconscious in her cell.”

She was immediately rushed to Beckley ARH where life saving measures were unsuccessful and she died.

The death is now under investigation by the West Virginia State Police and the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

It’s the latest incident in the correctional system which has been under intense scrutiny in recent months due to other inmate deaths and issues of alleged poor treatment and under staffing.
