HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Former Marshall University men’s basketball coach Dan D’Antoni is transitioning into a new role with the school.
Marshall University President Brad D. Smith announced Thursday that D’Antoni has been appointed as an ambassador and advisor to their visionary strategy known as “Marshall For All, Marshall Forever.” Smith said D’Antoni is the epitome of that phrase and will do well in the position.
“His journey has showcased the arc of possibility and achievement, while dedicating his life to the success of the next generation and Marshall University,” Smith said. “I am thrilled for this next chapter of Marshall’s journey with Dan D’Antoni.”
D’Antoni’s position will consist of working closely President Smith in leading more high school students to choose Marshall as their next stop in their education journey. D’Antoni will also be involved with supporting the “Run with the Herd” initiative and with potential and longstanding donors to the university.
“The unwavering love that Dan has for the school and this state, which has been evident throughout his career, will continue to inspire, guide, and enable the future of Marshall University in meaningful ways,” said Smith.
D’Antoni was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Herd in March. The university opted to promote former associate head coach Cornelius “Corny” Jackson, whom D’Antoni was in full support of becoming the new men’s head coach.
“I am excited to continue doing my part for my school,” D’Antoni said. “I want to thank Brad Smith for allowing me to be a part of what I know will be historic growth at Marshall University.”
