Federal disaster declared for April 11 storm in Kanawha County

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va — Kanawha County has learned that the White House has declared a federal disaster declaration for flooding that happened in parts of Charleston and parts of western Kanawha County on April 11th. The declaration is for individual assistance.

Kanawha County Emergency Management Director C.W. Sigman says there was significant damage in several areas.

“Most of the flooding was in the western part of the county and in Charleston,” Sigman said. “The hardest hit areas were some of the streams in Charleston and the St. Albans area and close to South Charleston-Davis Creek, places like that.”

Residents who suffered damage can apply with FEMA online for assistance or go to FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in Dunbar beginning Friday.

According to Sigman, FEMA is already set up in Kanawha County in connection with the disaster declaration from the April 2nd storm and tornadoes.

“The same places people are going and the same places they had registered for the April 2 tornado event, is the same numbers and the same places.”

Despite the circumstances, Sigman says the county is fortunate to have the help coming in.

“We’re very fortunate that we do have help coming in,” Sigman said. “Our commission really wants us to push out the information, that way nobody is left behind.”
