Jefferson County fire claims life

MIDDLEWAY, W.Va. — The West Virginia Fire Marshal’s Office was on scene mid-morning Monday after a fire at a home off Sulphur Springs Road in Jefferson County.

Chief Michael Mood of Middleway Fire Department tells The Panhandle News Network crews were called out at 3:52 a.m. to the home.

There is one confirmed fatality resulting from the blaze, according to Chief Mood.

Two other burn victims were transported for treatment, one via helicopter to a trauma center and the other to Berkeley Medical Center.

Chief Mood says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Four Jefferson County crews and two from Berkeley County were dispatched to the fire and traffic on Sulphur Springs Road was diverted for a few hours as crews worked the scene.

At the time of the initial report, the scanner traffic indicated fire was showing on all sides of the structure.

Eastern Panhandle Working Fires reported Jefferson County Companies 6, 2, 4, 3 and Berkeley Units BC20 BC 60 were among those dispatched.
