Tayveon Wilson will look to help lead Huntington High School deep into the Class AAAA playoffs when the Highlanders open postseason play Saturday against University.
Wilson can direct all of his immediate attention on what lies ahead in the near future after he offered a verbal commitment Thursday to play college football at Clemson.
“I like how they treated me on the visit,” said Wilson, a junior wideout/linebacker at HHS who projects as a tight end for the Tigers. “They treated me like one of them and it felt like home.”
Wilson performed well at a Clemson football camp over the summer and returned to campus in September for a home game.
“I talked to the coaches a lot and they all treated me well,” Wilson said.
One of the top recruits in West Virginia, Wilson earned first-team all-state honors last season for his punting prowess. He consistently displayed versatility and hauled in 27 passes for 588 yards, 11 of which went for touchdowns. Wilson added an additional three scores on the ground, three more on defense and one as a kickoff returner.
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound is a four-sport athlete at Huntington, also excelling in basketball, baseball and track.
Yet Wilson’s recruitment has taken off on the gridiron over the last year plus, and he fielded a number of high major offers to play football at the next level.
Other finalists included Penn State, Miami, Louisville and West Virginia, but Wilson settled on a Tigers’ program that won 10-plus games every year from 2011-2022 and National Championships in 2016 and 2018. Clemson is 8-2 this season after finishing 9-4 in 2023.
“This feels great and it’s relieving,” Wilson said. “It’s a lot of stress off my shoulders and I can focus on the playoffs.”
