One person dead, 2 injured, as flames rip through apartment building in West Logan

LOGAN, W.Va. — A fire in the West Logan community early Monday morning destroyed an apartment building and left one occupant dead.

Crews arrived at the Holly Apartments around 3:20 a.m. to a building fully engulfed in flames. The apartments are located on Route 10 in the community of Aracoma.

“We arrived on scene and had heavy fire coming out the rear side of the structure and it had already vented through the roof. We had to go to a defensive attack and it had spread to the attic. There was a body recovered,” said Logan Fire Department Captain Chris Hatfield.

The West Virginia State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire. The victim’s name has not been released. Two others were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

According to Hatfield the apartment building had eight units. All of the units were destroyed, but all other residents are now accounted for.
