WVU football schedule set for 2025 season

In the first year of Rich Rodriguez’s second stint as head coach at West Virginia, the Mountaineers will not play consecutive home games for the first time since 2013.

The Big 12 Conference put in place dates of nine conference matchups for every team Tuesday, finalizing schedules for all 16 league members.

The Mountaineers begin conference play September 20 with their first game at Kansas in four years.

WVU’s first Big 12 home game comes the following week against Utah in what will mark the first regular season matchup between the Mountaineers and Utes.

The only instance of consecutive road games follows, starting Friday, October 3 at BYU. Then comes the first of two bye weeks for WVU, which returns to action on Saturday, October 18 with a trip to UCF for a matchup with the Knights. Like West Virginia, UCF brought back one of its past head coaches in Scott Frost earlier this offseason.

A home contest with TCU on October 25 marks WVU’s fifth Big 12 game and is followed by a game at Houston on November 1.

Deion Sanders and Colorado visit Morgantown on November 8 for the Buffaloes’ third all-time meeting with the Mountaineers and first game at West Virginia in 16 years.

The last league road game comes in the form of a matchup at defending Big 12 champion Arizona State on November 15. That will be the third-ever meeting between the Sun Devils and Mountaineers and the first in the regular season since 1979.

Following a second bye week, WVU wraps up its regular season November 29 with a home game against Texas Tech, marking the second straight season the Mountaineers and Red Raiders will meet in their respective regular season finales.

Six of West Virginia’s nine league opponents in 2025 were not part of the 2024 schedule: Arizona State, BYU, Colorado, Houston, TCU and Utah.

They replace Arizona, Baylor, Cincinnati, Iowa State, Kansas State and Oklahoma State from last season’s Big 12 slate.

WVU opens its 2025 campaign August 30 with a matchup against Robert Morris of the FCS. The Mountaineers are at Ohio the first Saturday in September and then welcome Pitt for the Backyard Brawl on September 13 to end non-league play.

The combined 2024 record of the Mountaineers’ opponents next season was 91-62.

Seven of West Virginia’s 11 FBS opponents in 2025 posted a winning record last year, while three — Ohio, BYU and Arizona State — won 11 games.
