High winds may have played into death at Blackwater Falls Sled Run

DAVIS, W.Va. — An investigation shows that extreme high winds may have caused a tree limb to break off a tree near the top of the Blackwater Falls State Park Sled Run, which killed a 14-year-old girl.

The limb struck a Virginia girl just before 1:30 on Sunday. The investigation shows the girl was approximately 75 yards from the top of the conveyer belt when the limb broke.

A 14-foot section of the tree fell down and struck her in the head. She was pronounced dead at Davis Memorial Hospital.

The parents of the victim were present.

The investigation continues.
