CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia Republican Party leaders say the party hit a major milestone this week when they surpassed Democratic party voter registration numbers in Marion County.
Marion County is a longtime stalwart for Democrats and West Virginia GOP Chairman Matt Herridge said it’s not insignificant to see such a deep blue county flip to red.
“This is really indicative of where the state is headed. We’re so excited to see this happen in Marion County,” said Herridge.
Herridge credited grassroots efforts by the West Virginia Republican Party for turning the tide. With Marion County’s flip, the West Virginia GOP is now the plurality party in 49 of the state’s 55 counties. Herridge said he was optimistic of at least another turn soon in a longtime Democratic stronghold.
“Frankly in West Virginia we all share such common values of faith, family, and freedom, Democrat or Republican. It just seems like the Democrat Party is moving further and further away from that as part of their identity and we’re happy to be the home for all West Virginians,” Herridge said.
