New Morgantown city manager eager to get started

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Soon-to-be Morgantown City Manager Jamie Miller says she’s looking forward to beginning her work in the community on June 23.

Miller is currently the city manager of Paris, Kentucky, a city of about 10,000 people just outside Lexington.

Miller said she is excited to get down to business with the multiple stakeholders. She believes her leadership can lay the foundation for future growth and development.

“I see Morgantown as a place where thoughtful leadership can make a meaningful impact,” Miller said Friday on WAJR’s “Talk of the Town.” “I’m so excited to get to work alongside the city council, the staff, businesses and residents to support a thriving future.”

Miller said she has been watching the developments with the camping ban and wants to make sure all people are treated fairly.

“I think more than anything it’s important to remember we are addressing the needs of a portion of our population as we move forward and we want to do that with the dignity of every individual in mind,” Miller said. “So, I think how we implement it is going to really be key.”

Miller said her past experience in finance, human resources and operations gives her the knowledge to not just manage the team but to possibly bring new ideas to improve city operations.

“It has to be day-in, day-out relationships, and make sure we’re focusing on the fact that we have a common goal to serve Morgantown and its residents, businesses, and everybody that is here,” Miller said.

There have been ongoing challenges between city hall and first responders in recent years. Miller said she’s had good relationships in previous jobs.

“Throughout my career I’ve worked closely with first responders, and they are a true core service to a local government,” Miller said. “And with all employees, the relationship we build every day is so critical.”

As for living in city limits, Miller said she already has made an offer on a property in the city and plans to be active in the community.

“I absolutely think being out in the community is critical and I’m pleased to share I have an offer in on a house and I’m excited to move into Morgantown shortly,” Miller said.

Morgantown voters rejected a proposed city charter change in last month’s election that would have allowed the city manager to live outside the city.
