Nitro WR Malachi Thompson accepts WVU scholarship offer

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A fourth West Virginia prep prospect in the 2026 class has accepted a scholarship offer from a Power 4 conference school. Nitro wide receiver Malachi Thompson has verbally committed to compete at West Virginia University.

Thompson won the Randy Moss Award as the state’s top wide receiver in the 2024 season. He reeled in 74 passes for 1,593 yards and 18 touchdowns for the Wildcats, helping them to a 10-2 season and a spot in the Class AAA quarterfinals. In his sophomore season, Thompson had 57 catches for 1,264 yards and 20 touchdown receptions.

Thompson holds ten Division I scholarship offers and he announced WVU’s offer on June 12. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound receiver has also received offers from Marshall, Eastern Kentucky, Toledo, Youngstown State, Ohio, Temple, Kent State, Akron and Miami of Ohio.

Thompson joins Huntington’s Tayveon Wilson (Clemson), Spring Mills’ Xavier Anderson (Cincinnati) and University’s Jimmy Gregg (Syracuse) as West Virginia student-athletes to accept Division I scholarship offers. Huntington lineman Mason Ramsey has verbally committed to Marshall University.
