LOGAN, W.Va. –Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College’s Board of Governors has appointed a new chair and welcomed a new member.
During a special meeting Monday, board members voted to appoint Sonya Porter as the new chair. Porter is the former Logan County Sheriff and currently serves as the Executive Director of the Logan County Office of Emergency Management. She replaces Brent Tomblin in the role.
The board also welcomed Anna Adkins as its newest member. She was sworn in by the Governor’s Office.
Adkins is the owner and managing attorney at Adkins Law Firm in Charleston. She holds degrees from Southern, West Virginia State University, and the Appalachian School of Law.
These changes come after the West Virginia Council for Community and Technical College Education assumed oversight of the board in April, limiting its authority to appoint, dismiss, or oversee the institution’s president for a period of two years.
The council also replaced former president Pamela Alderman due to conflicts between her and the board, as well as the failure to follow institutional practices. Dr. Corely Dennison was appointed as interim president and will serve through the end of the year.
There next meeting is scheduled for August 19.
