Announced coal layoffs take effect this weekend

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Close to 500 coal miners in southern West Virginia are working their final shifts headed into the weekend. Back in June Beckley based coal company Civil LLC announced plans to lay off 279 miners at nine of its southern West Virginia mining operations. Those layoffs take effect Saturday.

The biggest number of miners were at the company’s C-V 2 mine in Fayette County which had 135 workers. Another 20 workers at the mine’s prep plant also lost their jobs. Additional layoffs will be happening at the company’s Delbarton Prep Plant in Mingo County, the Eagle Energy Mine in Kimberly and a handful of jobs at the Stella facility at Kermit Mingo County, Pine Creek facility in Omar in Logan County, the Pagie Loadout in Kincaid in Fayette County, the Falcon facility at Van in Boone County, and at the Beckley Mechanic Shop.

Civil LLC did not give any reason for the layoffs.

Those layoffs come along side a separate announcement from Core Natural Resources which idled the Itnam Mine in Wyoming County and put 200 workers out of a job.
