Kanawha deputies say homeowner fatally shot intruder

ROCKY FORK, W.Va. — Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies say a homeowner shot and killed a man he found inside his home Friday afternoon.

According to deputies, a man returned home to his residence on Lick Branch Road in the Rocky Fork area to discover an armed intruder.

“The homeowner showed up at the residence and when he went to the door he was met basically in the doorway by the intruder. The intruder was armed with a bat and knife,” Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Josh Lester said.

The two men got into a fight outside the residence.

“The homeowner was also armed, he had a firearm, and as this escalated he ended up shooting the intruder outside the home,” Lester said.

The residence where the shooting took place was not the primary residence of the homeowner. Lester said he had come out to check the property. He said the two men didn’t know each other.

The homeowner has not been charged, Lester said.

“The prosecutor’s office is fine with that as well. Unless something changes as the investigation develops, as of right now, there are no charges filed,” Lester said.

The name of the intruder hasn’t yet been released.
