CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Members of the West Virginia National Guard will be deployed to Washington D.C. to help with public safety patrols ordered by President Donald Trump.
Governor Patrick Morrisey on Saturday announced he has directed members of the West Virginia National Guard to support the President’s initiative. According to a Morrisey press release, the effort is to “restore cleanliness and safety in Washington D.C.”
The troops will be under the command of West Virginia Adjutant General Jim Seward. Their involvement will include providing mission-essential equipment, specialized training, and an estimated 300 to 400 skilled personnel as directed. Funding for the mission will be from the federal level.
“West Virginia is proud to stand with President Trump in his effort to restore pride and beauty to our nation’s capital,” said Governor Morrisey. “The men and women of our National Guard represent the best of our state, and this mission reflects our shared commitment to a strong and secure America.”
“This initiative aligns with our values of service and dedication to our communities,” said Maj. Gen. Seward. “We stand ready to support our partners in the National Capital Region and contribute to the collective effort of making our nation’s capital a clean and safe environment. The National Guard’s unique capabilities and preparedness make it an invaluable partner in this important undertaking.”
It’s the latest deployment in a long history of the West Virginia National Guard’s role in the National Capital Region Partnership. The announcement from the Morrisey Administration did not indicate when the troops would leave for Washington or how long they would be deployed. It also did not indicate what units will be called up.
President Trump recently activated Guard troops to reinforce police efforts on the streets of Washington D.C. amid rampant crime in the nation’s capital.
