MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Entering his third season in the National Football League, Martinsburg High School and Shepherd University graduate Tyson Bagent has become one of the league’s highest-paid backup quarterbacks.
On Wednesday, Bagent and the Chicago Bears agreed on a two-year contract extension, which will keep him in the Windy City through the 2027 season. Although financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, multiple published reports indicate that the deal will pay Bagent a total of $10 million over two years.
“We are fortunate to ensure that Tyson remains a member of the Chicago Bears,” said general manager Ryan Poles. “He is one of the hardest workers on our team and in addition to being a great competitor and teammate, he is a catalyst for positive influence throughout our entire organization.”
“Tyson epitomizes what we are building at the Chicago Bears,” said head coach Ben Johnson. “We are constructing a team that is driven by belief and built by hard work, and there is no better example of that than Tyson Bagent.”

Charean Williams of ProFootballTalk reports that Bagent’s contract puts him behind only Anthony Richardson, Marcus Mariota, Jacoby Brissett, Zach Wilson, Jarrett Stidham and Tyrod Taylor in average annual value among backup quarterbacks. Williams also reports that this contract extension is the first awarded to a Chicago quarterback since Jay Cutler in 2014.
Bagent was signed as a free agent by the Bears in 2023 after a record-breaking career at Shepherd. He won the Harlon Hill Trophy in 2021 as the nation’s top Division II player.
Bagent made four starts and appeared in five games during his rookie season. He appeared in four games last season. In two preseason games this month, Bagent has completed 26-of-41 passes for 299 yards. He is No. 2 on the Bears’ depth chart behind 2024 No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams.
