Hancock County Commission reaches out to Ohio neighbors to help with animal shelter

NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va. — The Hancock County Commission has agreed with the Humane Society in nearby Jefferson County, Ohio for that organization to take over management and operations of the Hancock County animal shelter.

Hancock County officials said their Ohio neighbors will bring stability to the Hancock County program that’s been lacking.

Hancock County Commissioner Tommy Ogden told WTOV-TV it’s going to ge a great partnership.

I’m really excited to work with Jefferson County. I think they bring expertise; they have a proven track record of doing great things for their community and we’re hoping we can transfer that to us,” Ogden said.

Jefferson County has a 22-day average shelter stay for dogs. Hancock County’s average shelter stay is currently 128 days.

The current shelter staff in Hancock County is expected to remain in place.

A contract between the two organizations still must be finalized.
