Deputies: Morgantown advocate charged with obstructing police at homeless shelter

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Court records indicate the founder and board president of Project Rainbow near Morgantown, has been charged with obstructing law enforcement with threats of harm after an incident Tuesday evening.

Information from the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department said deputies were called to the Rainbow House for “domestic issues” at 8:30 p.m.

Police said Erin Shelton prevented their entry and impeded their investigation into the incident report at the scene.

Shelton, 40, of Morgantown, has pleaded not guilty and is free on bond.

Project Rainbow is a shelter designated for members of the LGBTQ community that opened in 2023. The organization has received state funding and is guided by a nine member board.

MECCA 911 records indicate first responders have bee dispatched to Project Rainbow 488 times so far this year.
