Former state Senator Larry Edgell died on Christmas Eve.
Edgell, a Democrat from New Martinsville, served in the Senate from 1998 to 2014. He was the president pro tem of the Senate, a leadership position. He was also a retired teacher and a veteran of the United States Navy.
Edgell had continued to live in New Martinsville with his wife, Cecilia. Their daughter and son are Eva and Josh.
“It is with profound sadness to hear that my dear friend and colleague, Senator Larry J. Edgell passed away on Christmas Eve,” said former Senate President Jeff Kessler.
“He selflessly served the Second Senatorial District and the entire state. With a lifetime of teaching experience, he was a valued member of the Education and Finance Committees. He served with distinction as President Pro Tem of the Senate. He was a man of great integrity who was trusted and admired by both sides of the aisle. ”
The state Democratic Party issued a statement expressing condolences.
“Larry Edgell exemplified what it means to be a public servant,” said West Virginia Democratic Party Chairman Mike Pushkin.
“He was guided by a deep sense of duty—to his students, his constituents, and his state. As a teacher, a veteran, and a legislator, Larry dedicated his life to lifting others up and expanding opportunity for West Virginians. Our hearts are with Cecilia, Eva, Josh, and the entire Edgell family during this difficult time.”
Gov. Patrick Morrisey said he was sorry to hear of Edgell’s death.
“Senator Edgell devoted nearly two decades of his life to serving the people of West Virginia, representing his community with integrity, humility, and a steadfast commitment to the public good,” Morrisey said.
“A proud veteran, educator, and legislator, he exemplified the very best of public service. Whether in the classroom, in uniform, or in the halls of the Capitol, he worked tirelessly to expand opportunity and improve the lives of others. His legacy of service to the Mountain State will be long remembered.
