CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin says every storm presents its own set of challenges and that’s the case for the Capital City after the weekend storm.

That patience begins with the most basic of services like garbage pick-up. Goodwin said the transfer station is closed because of the weather.
“So the landfill is down and so what we are doing right now is we are trying to pick-up as much trash as we can in our trucks,” Goodwin said Tuesday on 580Live on WCHS Radio. “I can’t imagine we’ll get through all of our routes.”
Her message to residents, “Thanks for your patience.”
Goodwin said patience is also required in clearing city streets of snow and ice.
”You just have to troubleshoot. There are times in these hills and valleys that some areas just get it worse. It’s far and away different on the West Side hill than downtown,” Goodwin said.
The city was making an emergency purchase for more salt Tuesday.
Goodwin said the frigid cold is causing problems. She said it’s too cold for the parking smart meters to work. She said there’s also a lot of ice on the top floors of the city’s parking garages that also requires patience from residents.
Goodwin said cooperation has been good.
“We never like to see downtown streets, any streets in the city, kind of empty and sparse but by golly we do when we’re trying to get our salt trucks through, our refuse trucks through, our emergency responders,” Goodwin said.
