Sammons nets 31 as Wayne defeats Buffalo, 73-57

BUFFALO, W.Va. — Junior guard Jayce Sammons scored 19 of her game-best 31 points in the first half as Wayne improved to 13-3 with a 73-57 win at Buffalo.

The 2025 Class AAA state champions have won seven consecutive games after a 6-3 start to the season.

Wayne (13-3) connected on 11 three-point field goals, with seven of those coming in their 42-point first-half effort.

“Jaycee Mills has started hitting shots, and we knew she was capable. Megan [Thompson] has been hitting shots lately. We’ve seen Lexi [Blankenship] shoot well in the state tournament last year, so she can shoot shots,” said Wayne head coach Wade Williamson. “When we are making three-point shots when they are leaving us open and trying junk defenses and stuff, it is hard to junk defense us. That gets us into a really good rhythm offensively.”

Sammons entered the game averaging just over 27 points per game.

“She can pass the ball too and she does a lot of things defensively that people don’t look at. She does things a lot of people don’t understand even from a statistical standpoint.  She gets us organized a lot of the time. She means a lot to us.”

The game was tied at 18 after the first quarter before the Pioneers’ 24-point outburst in the second quarter. Wayne used scoring runs of eight and seven unanswered points to build a 42-31 halftime advantage.

“Our defense got better in the second quarter. I really stressed that and even in the third quarter we talked about at halftime to hold them under 13 points in that quarter. And we held them to nine in that quarter.”

Wayne extended their lead to 60-40 at the end of three quarters.

Mills scored 18 points for the Pioneers and she led the team with four three-point field goals. Lexi Blankenship added 11 points for Wayne while Megan Thompson added ten.

Brooke Woods led Buffalo (10-4) with 22 points. Anna Boggess added ten points for the Bison.
