Man shot to death in Shepherdstown, suspect in custody

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — A man has died following a shooting in Shepherdstown.

Authorities said a call to 911 at 3:30 a.m. Friday said a man was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside a University Heights Apartment off Hensel Drive.

The caller said another man had fled the area on foot.

Law enforcement and first responders found 19-year-old Evan Taylor inside the apartment. Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses provided the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Shepherd University police with a description of the suspect.

Shepherd PD Officer Adam Letts reviewed university surveillance footage and saw a man matching the description and that man, Travis Smith, 25, was tracked on surveillance cameras to the H Lot parking area where he was seen getting into a vehicle.

Officers Letts and Ricketts detained Smith and found a loaded Glock handgun on him, investigators said.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office tells MetroNews Smith has been charged with murder in Taylor’s death.

Sheriff Thomas Hansen would like to thank the cooperating agencies including the Charles Town, Ranson, Shepherdstown, and Shepherd University Police Departments as well as the Martinsburg Office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and the Jefferson County Emergency Services Agency.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lt. Steven Holz of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at (304) 728-3205
