ELKINS, W.Va. –The Superintendent of Randolph County Schools abruptly resigned.
The move happened during a special meeting of the Randolph County School Board Friday evening. After an hour and a half executive session board members emerged and announced the resignation of Superintendent Dr. Shawn Dilly was accepted unanimously. Board member Sherri Collett made a motion to forward testimony from the executive session to what she called the “appropriate authorities.”
“I move to direct counsel for the board to provide the information discussed in the executive session to the appropriate authorities,” Collett said.
Dilly has served for two years, a difficult period of enrollment declines and consolidations. The State Board of Education placed Randolph County Schools under a state of emergency in June of 2025.
In the fall of 2025 Dilley told MetroNews the district has lost nearly 700 students, leading to the closure of Harman K-12 and moving those students to Jennings Randolph Elementary, Elkins Middle, and Elkins High schools. At that time, the board approved the closure of North Elementary and the consolidation of those students into Jennings Randolph Elementary. The changes were to take effect in the 2026-2027 academic year.
The board will hold a special meeting Wednesday to determine the next steps for the district.
“I move that the Board of Education add an item to the special meeting agenda for Wednesday, March 26, 2026, for the possible appointment of an interim superintendent of schools.
