Charleston man in custody accused of taking, crashing Anmoore city vehicle

SUTTON, W.Va. — State police have charged a man in connection with the theft of a vehicle from the town of Anmoore that was crashed and totaled.

John Browning (WVRJA)

Troopers said Friday at 1:49 p.m., they responded to a report of a single vehicle crash near the Sutton exit on Interstate 79 in Braxton County.

At the scene, troopers made contact with a witness that said he saw a driver flip a vehicle right in front of him. The man told troopers he stopped to offer help, but the man attempted to steal his vehicle before fleeing into the woods.

A short time later troopers observed John Browning, 47, of Charleston, on the side of Route 4 and took him into custody.

Browning was transported to Braxton County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The investigation determined the vehicle Browning crashed was stolen from the town of Anmoore.

Browning told troopers that he was attempting to seek treatment in Harrison County for fentanyl withdrawal.

Browning was later transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital to be treated for injuries sustained in the crash.

Browning, who was released from the hospital Saturday, is held in the Central Regional Jail on charges of attempted grand larceny, possession of a stolen vehicle, DUI and battery. Bail is set at $30,000.
