HAMPSHIRE COUNTY, W.Va. –A Hampshire County man was convicted by a federal jury Thursday of trafficking methamphetamine and illegally having nine firearms.
Charles Frederick Muffley, III, 50, was found guilty on all three counts of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine hydrochloride, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and unlawful possession of firearms.
According to a U.S. Attorney release, evidence presented during the trial helped to establish that Muffley played a central role in the drug trafficking operation responsible for distributing several pounds of high-purity meth throughout Hampshire County and the surrounding areas.
In September 2024, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service had intercepted a package containing nearly a pound of meth, which led them to Muffley.
They later searched Muffley’s home and seized meth, drug paraphernalia, six digital scales, cash, ammunition, and firearms, including handguns, rifles, and shotguns. He is prohibited from having firearms because of a prior felony conviction.
“This conviction reflects the serious danger posed by drug trafficking and illegal firearms possession in our communities,” U.S. Attorney Matthew Harvey said. “The defendant not only distributed methamphetamine but also did so while unlawfully possessing firearms. We remain committed to working with our law enforcement partners to hold offenders accountable.”
Muffley faces 15 years to life for conspiracy, up to 30 years for the possession with intent, and up to 15 years for the firearms conviction.
