Freedom Caucus urges emergency fuel tax suspension

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –The West Virginia Freedom Caucus asked Governor Patrick Morrisey Friday to suspend all state fuel taxes for 90 days.

The suspension would include taxes on gasoline, diesel, and heating oil.

“When government makes everything more expensive, the least it can do is get out of the way,” Freedom Caucus Chairman S. Chris Anders said in a news release.

According to the release, West Virginia citizens are facing higher grocery bills, skyrocketing utility costs, and the sharp increases at the pump.

“This isn’t complicated,” Del. Laura Kimble said. “Families are hurting, and the government is still taking its cut on every gallon.”

The Freedom Caucus urges the Governor to use his existing constitutional authority to declare an emergency and suspend the fuel taxes immediately.

“Government shouldn’t profit when people are struggling to get to work or heat their homes,” Freedom Caucus Secretary Henry Dillon said. “This is a direct, immediate way to return money to the people.”
