CHARMCO, W.Va. — A woman is recovering from gunshot wounds after she fired on Greenbrier County sheriff’s deputies.
According to Sheriff Bart Baker three deputies responded to a “shots fired” call just before midnight Monday at Greenbrier West High School.
“When they arrived on scene, they heard gunshots coming from just west of the campus. They went over there to investigate and when they got there, they encountered a subject and as soon as they started giving commands, the subject raised a firearm and began shooting at them and they returned fire,” said Baker.
None of the deputies was hit, but the suspect was struck. Deputies immediately started first-aid and called for EMS. The woman was flown out of Greenbrier County to a trauma center and is in stable condition today.
Baker said it’s unknown why she was in the area or why she opened fire on his deputies.
“Unknown at this time what she was doing in the area of why she was shooting, ” he said.
The woman will face criminal charges for the incident. West Virginia State Police were called in to take over the investigation of the officer involved shooting.
Although it happened near the campus of Greenbrier West, Baker said it had nothing to do with the school.
“There’s no ties to the school, they just happened to be in a wooded area just west of the school. Of course on the initial call, the first thing you do is go to the campus and make sure it is secured. Of course it’s spring break week and there’s no students or staff there,” Baker said.
