Court determines Clarksburg woman accused of killing her mother incompetent to stand trial

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — A Clarksburg woman accused of fatally stabbing her mother in March 2025 has been found not competent to stand trial.

Shanna Marie Vannorman (WVDCR)

Shanna Van Norman, 42, allegedly stabbed her mother, Elaine Labenne, 64, one time in the chest at the Laurel Lanes apartment complex in the North View area.

Professionals determined Van Norman could stand trial after receiving the proper therapy. After she received the maximum period of restorative services allowed by law the judge determined her to be incompetent to stand trial.

Van Norman is in the custody of the Department of Human Services at the William R. Sharpe Jr. Psychiatric Hospital in Weston until her scheduled dangerousness and risk assessment is conducted on May 28.
