MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Berkeley County’s ICE Task Force has arrested a man in the country illegally following what they say was an attempt to unlawfully buy a Glock-19 handgun.

The Sheriff’s Office tells The Panhandle News Network sheriff deputies assigned to the Berkeley County ICE Task Force assisted in the apprehension of Mauricio Melendez-Bangas, 23 who had come to the attention of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the ATF Task Force in Martinsburg after attempting to unlawfully purchase the handgun.
A background check confirmed he was prohibited from possessing or purchasing firearms, prompting notification to the ATF.
Last month, Melendez-Bangas had been charged with grand larceny following an incident March 31.
On the morning April 9th, Melendez-Bangas was seen leaving a home in south Berkeley. Deputies conducted a traffic stop five minutes later at the intersection of Gerrardstown Road and Henshaw Road, where he
was taken into custody without incident.
He was then taken into custody by the ICE Task Force, taken to the courthouse on the felony charge and subsequently held at the Eastern Regional Jail pending the state charges.
Melendez-Bangas is also subject to an ICE detainer, according to the sheriff’s office.
“This case underscores the strength of coordination and partnership among our local, state, and federal agencies. When individuals who are unlawfully present in our country are also attempting to illegally purchase firearms and are facing felony charges such as Grand Larceny, we will act swiftly and decisively,” Sheriff Rob Blair said.
“Our top priority remains the safety and security of our community. We will continue to work closely with our federal partners to ensure offenders are held accountable. This case serves as a clear reminder that the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office maintains zero tolerance for those who seek to victimize our law-abiding citizens. I commend all law enforcement personnel involved for their continued dedication and professionalism.~
