CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Two men will spend time in the Anthony Correctional Center for young adult offenders after admitting to participating in a robbery that left the victim with multiple gunshot wounds.
Donovan Brown, 24, and Jaquan Evans, 23, each appeared before Kanawha County Circuit Judge Maryclaire Akers on Tuesday for sentencing in connection with the February 2025 shooting that resulted from a robbery on Charleston’s Grant Street.
Both men previously pleaded guilty to their involvement and Kanawha County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Madison Tuck indicated they cooperated with prosecutors and were prepared to testify against their co-conspirators if called upon.
As part of those plea agreements, both men faced ten-year sentences but requested alternatives during their hearings.
Judge Akers offered Brown a choice between the agreed-upon ten-year sentence and a twenty-year suspended sentence contingent upon the completion of treatment at the Anthony Center. After consulting with his attorney, Brown chose the latter with the stipulation that he be educated in a trade while incarcerated.
Evans requested either home confinement or youthful offender treatment, as well as drug treatment after admitting that he was under the influence of percocet on the night of the robbery. Judge Akers granted his request for treatment at the Anthony Center with a ten-year suspended sentence.
Brown and Evans are the fourth and fifth individuals to be sentenced in connection with the crime, following Nyasha Claytor, Kenneth Washington, and Jaquise Jackson, all of whom received their sentences for first-degree robbery earlier this month. Antoine “A2” Miller awaits sentencing after admitting to helping plan the robbery over the phone from the South Central Regional jail and pleading guilty first-degree robbery in March.
An additional suspect, Disnime Mitchell, was shot and killed by Charleston SWAT team members as they attempted to take him into custody last year.
