CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The trial for a man accused of shooting and killing a woman outside a Charleston convenience store last year will not go forward as planned next week.

Jacob Fields, 19, appeared in Kanawha County Circuit Court on Thursday for a hearing to delay his trial for allegedly murdering Tiffany Adkins as she walked into the Sheetz store in Kanawha City in 2025. Fields’ attorney, Michael Del Giudice, requested and was granted a continuance from Judge Maryclaire Akers after receiving a significant amount of previously unseen evidence from the prosecution in the last week.
Del Giudice indicated that he received audio and transcripts of around 400 jail calls from November and December 2025 that did not include specific dates or identify the speakers. He stated he believed the calls contained exculpatory evidence that would assist Fields’ defense during the trial previously scheduled to begin on Monday.
Additionally, Del Giudice received the 911 call and computer-aided dispatch report related to the shooting for the first time on Wednesday, which positively identified a previously unknown man seen on video at the scene. Kanawha County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Madison Tuck stated that the prosecution had only obtained that evidence recently after interviewing a witness that said they had made a 911 call.
After initially maintaining that the state was prepared to move forward as scheduled, Tuck also moved to continue the trial, and Judge Akers in turn scheduled the proceedings for July 13.
Fields faces a charge of first-degree murder for allegedly shooting and killing Adkins, which the prosecution described previously as a “thrill kill.” Fields initially told police that he was cleaning his gun inside a car at one of the station’s gas pumps when it went off and struck the victim.
Detectives say review of surveillance footage shows Fields raising the gun and pointing it at Adkins before firing.
