WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — The medical examiner took the stand Thursday during the trial of Timothy Kennedy; the man accused of killing a West Virginia State Trooper in June 2023.
Medical Examiner Piotr Kubiczek reviewed the case and testified that Sgt. Cory Maynard’s cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.
Kennedy, 32, is accused of shooting and killing Maynard in the Beach Creek area in Mingo County. Kennedy allegedly ambushed Maynard and other officers while they were responding to an earlier shooting. Kennedy faces multiple charges including first-degree murder, in the death of Maynard.
Crime lab experts said that it appeared that Maynard’s blood was on defendant Kennedy’s clothing and that Kennedy’s DNA was on Maynard’s gun when he was arrested.
Wednesday, both a state trooper and a nurse testified that Kennedy was acting normally during his examinations. Kennedy’s defense attorneys told the jury on Monday that he was stoned on meth and lacked the intent for first-degree murder.
On Tuesday, the victim from the firs shooting, Ben Baldwin testified.
Testimony is expected to continue Friday.
