MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Mountaineer Bike Park is under construction at Mylan Park near Morgantown after years of planning.
The all-inclusive facility will be USA BMX-sanctioned, host national events and be available to residents of all ability levels in the region.
Mylan Park Foundation Executive Director Ron Justice said Anderson Excavating is doing the work valued at about $7 million. Justice said the project will be partially funded with a federal and an Economic Development Authority grant.
“It will be a hard-surface track—one of the only ones of its kind in the country,” Justice said. “We’ll be constructing a pump track, skills loop, flow lines, really a big tourist attraction, but it will serve the local community very well.”
The facility will host some national events and will be a local and regional draw for bike enthusiasts. The events will add to the economic growth opportunities that softball, baseball, USA Diving, track & field, and other events have brought to the park.
“It looks like we’ll have three national events over a five-year period, and then there will be regional and local events as well,” Justice said. “There will be a number of different events at the facility.”
The complex of tracks will be situated behind the Peak Health Aquatic Center on Five acres of land. The hard surface will make the facility available to kids and adults of all skill and ability levels. The project also includes restrooms, shade structures, and a registration building.
“It allows folks with disabilities to be able to ride on the surfaces,” Justice said. “There’s equipment like adaptive bikes that let them go on the facilities.”
Work on the project will continue through this biking season, but Justice said the plan is to have the facility for the next biking season.
“We’re hoping to have significant completion by December of 2026 and open fully to the biking community by March of 2027,” Justice said.
Justice also said work continues to elevate the status of the KOA Campground that opened last year. The site is currently designated as a “Holiday” site, the mid-level ranking for KOA facilities. The “Resort” status designates destinations for recreational and luxury camping.
“We’re also really trying to expand our KOA Campground and get it to “Resort” status,” Justice said. “Hopefully we do that within the next year.”
