GLENVILLE, W.Va. — Through the first five innings in their Class A Region IV co-final against Man, Gilmer County left six runners on base and all of those were stranded in scoring position.
Then came the bottom of the sixth inning. The Titans sent ten men to the plate in a five-run frame to give GCHS (27-6) a second consecutive regional championship and a spot in the state tournament with a 5-1 win over the Hillbillies.
Trailing 1-0 entering the sixth, Gilmer County had six consecutive batters reach base in that decisive inning. The Titans had five walks and two hits in the inning, bookended with clutch hits from Remington Huffman and Kolten Holbert.
“We wanted to work the count a little bit and see if we could get some free bases and kind of go from there,” said Gilmer County head coach Jacob Wolfe. “We had left so many runners on in scoring position. We finally got a big hit here and there and we strung together some runs.”
Man (15-17) took an early 1-0 lead just three batters into the game. Noah Frazier, who led off the game with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a fly ball and scored on an error.
However, that is all the Titans would allow in the rubber game of their three-game regional series. Gilmer County starting pitcher Roddick Page allowed two hits in five innings of work before Huffman posted scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh innings.
“[Page] has really come up big for us. He’s a freshman and that’s a good team he just pitched against. He pitched five innings of solid baseball and Remi came in and gave them a different look, more of a tail to the fastball and a little bit more of a breaker. They were able to keep them off balance.”

Braxton Sword had two of Man’s four hits. MHS starting pitcher Landon Cantrell pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four hits.
Holbert went 3-for-3 for Gilmer County and he drove in two runs.
With the win, the Titans have advanced to the state tournament in back-to-back seasons. Wolfe is a Class of 2009 GCHS alumnus. Gilmer joins East Hardy, Pendleton County and Sherman in the Class A state tournament field.
“This is where I grew up. I played for Coach [Joe] Frashure, who had great success and a great track record. It means everything to me because I truly, truly love this county. It is great to do anything for these boys. And they work hard for me. So it is always great.”
Gilmer and Man met in the regional championship game for the second consecutive season. Their baseball and softball teams both played three games against each other in their respective Region IV tournaments.
“They took out our softball team, who was undefeated at the time. It is a brooding little rivalry. It is a fun rivalry. I really enjoy coaching against Mike Crosby. We talk all the time and he is a great guy, a great coach. I wish they would do it a little bit easier for me, because I would like to make it another eight years to coach my son through his senior year. But my heart may not make it. But they are a great team, stellar team.”
