SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Playing in the WVSSAC State Softball Tournament for the first time, Morgantown received four shutout performances from Madison Wisman, strong defense and progressively better offensive production throughout the tourney to win the Class AAAA Championship with an 8-0 (6-inning) win over University.
“What an incredible feeling. They worked so hard for this moment. I couldn’t be more proud of this team right here,” said Morgantown head coach Lorri Lipscomb. “They deserve every bit of this. I am happy, especially for these seniors stepping up. We started this as a journey in fall ball. And we said we knew we had the team that could take this. We had what it took and they put it together this weekend.
“They put in hours of work that nobody sees to get to this point. To have it all come together at this time, it is perfect.”
In four state tournament games, fourth-seeded Morgantown (27-10) outscored their opposition 18-0. A 6-0 win Wednesday evening over George Washington in the winner’s bracket final put MHS in the drivers seat heading into Thursday’s championship round.
University defeated George Washington, 3-0 earlier Thursday in an elimination game to advance to the final round.
MHS senior pitcher Madison Wisman pitched 27 scoreless innings in the state tournament against No. 5 Hurricane, No. 1 Cabell Midland, No. 3 George Washington and No. 2 University. Facing University for the third time this season, Wisman held the Hawks to five hits. She walked two batters and struck out three. In the four-game tournament, Wisman allowed just 14 hits. She walked seven and struck out 21, earning Most Outstanding Player honors in the Class AAAA Tournament.
“I feel so blessed to be here and to be surrounded by my best friends,” Wisman said. “To be able to come on a stage like this and for us to perform the way we did, it is unbelievable. I am so proud of us.”
MHS scored at least one run in five of their six innings at the plate against University (29-7). The Mohigans opened the scoring with a two-run single from Caroline Mallow in the first inning. They added another run in the second inning with an RBI triple from Carper Messerly.
After a scoreless third inning, MHS tacked on two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth to put the run rule in play.
Messerly went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
“I just know that we all have each other’s backs and the energy,” Messerly said. “I know that if I get it started, they’ll do their job and get me in. We are great teammates and we all play great as a team. We deserve every bit of it.”
Kayleigh White and Mallow each drove in two runs for MHS while Madi Stone, Messerly and Wisman and each drove in a run. White led Morgantown with three hits.
Playing in the state final for the second time in three years, University won three consecutive elimination games to reach the championship round.
