Former Wheeling Middle School principal charged with felony child abuse

WHEELING, W.Va. –A former Wheeling Middle School principal has been charged following an incident at the school in March.

Richard L. McCardle, 61, of Wheeling was charged Monday with a felony count of child abuse.

According to officials, officers had been notified by Ohio County Schools on March 9, regarding a physical altercation that involved a student and McCardle at the middle school, where he was serving as principal at the time.

Police said the charge comes after what they described as a lengthy investigation and consultation with the Ohio County Prosecutor’s Office.

McCardle turned himself in at Wheeling Police headquarters, was arraigned in Ohio County Magistrate Court and posted bond.

Since the case involves a juvenile, no other information has been released.
